National Simplicity Day on July 12th is my day all year 24/7. I am always thinking of a better way of doing stuff. And it took hold of my life at work when they asked me to be the continuous improvement facilitator at work. After reading and doing several projects, I remember going to the prez of the company and telling him that continuous improvement is a completely different way of running a business. It moves the business from a top-down silo structure to a bottom-up flat structure.
The amazing thing is that once you do it you can never stop doing it, because it improves your life every time you do it. To start on the path of continuous improvement you need to 5S something simple. Below are before and after pics of drawers, kitchen cabinets, and a lego video explaining 5S. In short, 5S is a visual way to store stuff.
Here are pics of before and after 5S of a kitchen drawer.

There is more to continuous improvement than 5S. There are the 7 waste, just-in-time, and leader standard work to mention a few.

Once you do continuous improvement, your life is better, which makes you want to do it again and again.
I need to mention one more 5S story I did at work, which was my email. Everyone everywhere is in email hell. Folks, email if for sending, not to store stuff. At work, all my work was by projects. I would sort my email on the hard drive by project folders. This means that I had no email at the end of the week. In fact, I deleted all my email folders and continued to sort all the email on the hard drive by project folder. Two things came out of this. Once the project was done, I did a PDCA (plan do check adjust) summary of the work. I published the PDCA online for all to see. I deleted that project folder. Yes, all of the project folder and emails. Gone. Yes, gone. The other gain was I had no email at the start of the week, which made me feel most excellent because my email hell never existed. I tried to get others at work to do the same but they could not break from hoarding email.
List it all. I make a daily to-do list before Ben and I go to work. I use a You ask, "How did you start on doing a list?" Again it started at work. The RMA department (RMA = return material authorization) would meet weekly and sit in a meeting room and go over the work we needed to do. It was boring and non productive. I moved the meeting from weekly to daily where we met in front of a big daily stand up board that listed all the returns we needed to repair. The most important part was it involved the whole RMA team in the design of the board. We moved the boring weekly hour meeting to a daily 10 minute standup meeting where everyone was on the same page doing the work that the manager wanted done. It was genius. I remember the big wigs from Chicago would come out to Alameda to watch us conduct a daily stand up meeting.
How to get started. I use a quarter sheet of paper for my todo list. See pic. The quarter is the backside of paper that I would recycle. I write "To Do" and date it. (Yes I did not date this one.). I keep it until I make a new to-do list and transfer the uncompleted items to the new list.
The Andronico's shopping list is a quarter of a spreadsheet. Before I go shopping I review the list and cross out any items. At the store, once I have the item in the shopping cart I take the list out of my pocket and tear the paper by the item to signify that I got that item. What is important about the list is that it is not on my Iphone. Everytime you take out the $1000 Iphone list, there is a chance you can drop it. Now times that by the number of items and and there is a reason why most people have a broken screen on their Iphone. I am proud to say that I have never had a broken screen and I own 5 phones. (4 are for playing Pokemon Go.)
The space program is interesting but not necessary. Even prior to my clairvoyance I was never interested in space stuff. Dr. Who was cool but that is about timelines. When the human race finally gets on the DEM path (Dark Energy & Matter) all of our lives will be better. Instead of looking at the stars, we will be talking to the star's avatars.
The weather from the Midwest to the east coast is devastating. I saw this video that explained why this part of the US is being devastated weekly. It seems that you need a mountain range to break up the weather and there is none from the Rockies to the East coast. And climate change is fueling the extreme weather.
The United States Postal Service under Postmaster DeJoy was a mess. Finally he left. Even a 2nd Trump term was too much for him.
What made you smile today? I have purchased more tools.
Before the tool talk there are before and after pics of the pavers we placed. We are working on cutting the existing walkway to continue the sloped walkway all the way to the end of the backyard. The 9" saw came with 40V 5A batteries, which don't last long. Time to buy the 40V 8A batteries, whciih come tomorrow. Also, I used the 5" saw on a track to cut a straight line for the 9" saw to follow on the walkway.
Below are shorts for concrete saws.
